Question: When can travellers still buy duty-free?
Created on the 10 August 2006
Answer: Duty-free and tax-free shopping is still available when travelling to a large range of international destinations - in fact to anywhere outside of the 27 current EU Member States (as listed under Q3 above). There are still a number of non-EU European destinations where duty-free is available, such as Norway, Switzerland, Croatia and Turkey. In addition there are a few special cases even within the EU where duty-free is still available, namely Gibraltar, the Canary Islands, the Channel Islands and that part of Cyprus not under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. Although these places are nominally within the EU, they are outside the Community Customs territory and therefore duty-free is still available when travelling to or from them.
